You want to make a career change.
But what’s your story?
Key people want to understand WHY you’re pivoting.
You must answer that question in a way that:
– is 100% true
– is 100% memorable
– 100% repositions you in their minds and in the marketplace.
But what if your story is complicated… or embarrassing… or boring?
During a major transition, my pitch was:
“I just sold my second business and as part of a sabbatical, I want to volunteer with a couple organizations that I admire, and see how I might help.”
All that was true.
It was also true that I was burnt out. I still needed to earn money. I wanted to do more creative work, but had no clue how.
And my current “job” was painting my house.
“Sabbatical” sounds cooler, doesn’t it?
I approached three people who led interesting organizations.
Long story short, after over-delivering on the volunteer initiatives, all three hired me, and my consulting career was born.
Whether changing careers is a dream, or a choice that wasn’t yours,
Reposition yourself with an authentic, interesting pitch.
Think of it as a fresh coat of paint.
